Boin Games

Ian here. Father of Lucas.

Lucas has his head buried in his script. We’ve teamed up to make a game. A console game at that. Lucas has been writing a script for months and he finally talked to me about it. He knows I’ve been deep in LLMs and more recently agentic harness, for years. He wondered, could we, somehow, make this game.

Who the fucks knows?

Honest answer, we have no idea, but we’re giving it a go and we’re going to share our progress here. Every mis-step, every small win, every milestone.

A month ago I had heard of Unreal Engine - I’m an occasional gamer - and Unity. Not Blender though, or Ink, or WriterDuet. We looked at Unreal and we looked at Unity and Unity won. So, our short term stack is:

Unity
Blender
Ink
WriterDuet

And then a bunch of tools we’ve made or are making ourselves which we’ll talk more about along the way. Plus who knows what else as we learn but likely to include from:

Pixelmator / Affinity Suite
DaVinci Resolve / Final Cut Pro
Ardour / Logic Pro
Motion

Lucas tells me the gaming community is AI resistant so we want to clarify a few things.

Our script will be 100% human authored. Sure our AI helpers may riff on ideas with us but Lucas will write every word. Art direction? 100% human too. But let’s be honest - the future is arriving fast. It’s the first time in history that two guys with a great story have even a remote chance of putting it out into the world. AI will be everywhere. Games studios will use it to make better games in less time. It’s going to be a great time to be a gamer.

So we’ll use AI a lot. Unapologetically. We have no other choice.

Unity & Blender

It’s already astonishing how much agents can do in Unity and Blender. And that’s only going to improve - probably fast. I can speak to that with the perspective of several years of daily use of LLMs and agents. We’re on the exponential now.

Agents can build complete scenes in Unity which exposes an MCP server you can use - well, I’ve yet to find something I can’t do - for anything you can do in the UI. At much faster speeds than I can drive the UI. I’ve learned the vocabulary of Unity so we can talk, the agents and me, on equal terms. I’ve a post coming up about how we’re building our own yaml based pipeline to make that smart, repeatable and scalable.

Blender exposes a Python API so the custom pipeline we’ll build there, modelled on the success we’ve had with Unity, is likely to be even more powerful.

Our Bet

Our bet, and so far it’s paying off, is that using agents to drive Blender and Unity directly, prompted in Codex, will allow us to overcome all our skill and experience issues. We can both write, but neither of us can draw, model or paint so we’re betting big on having taste and the skills to describe what we want.

We’ll see.
